Welcome to the Spotswood Hunt Club website! This site is for members and non-members alike. Spotswood Hunt Club is one of the oldest deer hunting clubs in the Fredericksburg area. We are located in Spotsylvania County and Culpeper County, along the Rapidan River and Rappahannock River, on the historic Chancellorsville battleground of the conflict in April/May 1863. The club has been in continuous operation since the early 1950’s, and still has two members who have been with the club since the earliest days. Spotswood Hunt Club operates under a well defined set of by-laws and rules, and is also incorporated. Club membership is limited to 45 adults, with junior members also allowed. The club is currently full at 45 members, and there is a waiting list of people who would like to join the club. In its long history Spotswood Hunt Club has had only five presidents. In chronological order the presidents have been Joe Timberlake, Francis Hicks, Dick Hove, Richard Garnett and current president Steve Garnett. Other club officers include a vice president, secretary-treasurer and a 3 member board of directors.
The club has always primarily been a deer hunting club. On organized hunt days the club uses a combination of man drives and mostly dog drives to move deer in the old southern style. The club has enjoyed great success in the last decade and many excellent bucks have been killed. The club currently hunts approximately 3500 acres, the vast majority of which is mature hardwood forest, and a small amount of cutovers and agricultural fields. The club continues to hold the deer hunting rights on two tracts of land which it originally leased in the beginning. All organized club hunts are conducted by a hunt committee which is appointed by the club. The club meets several times a year to conduct club business.
